R-22, also known as HCFC-22, was one of the most common refrigerants in domestic and commercial air conditioning, as well as in large centrifugal chillers for comfort cooling and industrial process cooling. Following the phase-out of CFCs it was widely adopted in refrigeration, both as a pure refrigerant and in blends.

Under the Ozone-Depleting Substances Regulations, the use of both virgin and recycled HCFCs to service refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment has been prohibited in the UK since 2015, and R-22 may not be used in new equipment.
